Update: At least 44 dead following landslides and flash flooding in eastern Indonesia

Flash flooding and subsequent landslides in eastern Indonesia have resulted in at least 44 deaths and have displaced thousands. Just after midnight local time, dozens of houses were hit by a mudslide in Lamenele, a village on the island of Flores. 38 bodies were recovered from the scene and five people were left injured. Three fatalities were also reported in Oyang Bayang village after flash floods swept people away and damaged 40 homes. Additionally, in the village of Waiburak, three people were killed when heavy overnight rainfall caused rivers to burst their banks, flooding homes across the East Flores Regency. The number of casualties and the reported damage is likely to increase as emergency rescue operations continue and information continues to be collected.
