Update: Leaders of breakaway republics in eastern Ukraine appeal
for recognition
For the first time, the leaders of the breakaway republics of Luhansk and
Donetsk have asked Russia's President Putin to recognise their independence
from Ukraine. They have also requested defence cooperation with Russia
following a similar call from the defence spokesperson for the Donetsk
People's Republic. President Putin has convened a security council meeting to
discuss their request.
