The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has detected a magnitude 5.5 earthquake 49 kilometres south of Hualien City. The earthquake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres at approximately 19:35 UTC. The extent of any infrastructure damage caused by the earthquake is unknown at this time. Other strong earthquakes of magnitudes above 5.5 have been documented in the area in recent hours.

The earthquake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres at approximately 20:29 UTC. Further earthquakes of a magnitude above 5.5 remain possible over the coming hours.
