Tropical Cyclone Kimi intensifies into Category 2 storm, new warnings issued

Authorities in Queensland have issued warnings for Ayr, Palm Island and Townsville as Tropical Cyclone Kimi nears landfall. According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, Kimi has intensified into a Category 2 storm, recording sustained winds of 95 kilometres per hour with gusts up to 130 kilometres per hour. Destructive winds, strong gales, heavy rainfall and abnormally high tides should be anticipated within the warning zones. The storm remains an estimated 130 kilometres east-southeast of Cairns and is expected to make landfall either tonight or Tuesday 19 January. Reports also indicate that the movement of the system remains relatively uncertain, and may not follow the projected path.
