Update: Fatalities
confirmed following gunfire in Beirut
According to the latest reports, one person is confirmed to have been
killed and at least eight others injured following exchanges of gunfire in
Beirut's Tayouneh area. A large military deployment has been reported with at
least one arrest also being communicated. The unrest was initially triggered
by a Hezbollah-Amal protest to demand the removal of Bitar, the judge in
charge of investigating the Beirut port explosion. The country's Minister of
Interior is set to chair a meeting of the Central Security Council at 13:00
local time. Prime Minister Najib Mikati has also called for calm.
