Update: Hundreds
of buildings damaged and casualties reported after earthquake and aftershocks
in Crete
Local media sources have confirmed that one person has been killed, at
least 20 others have been injured and around 1200 buildings have been damaged
after a 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck the island of Crete. The earthquake
was followed by around 20 aftershocks, causing additional damage. In the area
of Arkalochori, six out of ten houses have suffered serious damage. Buildings
in Roussochoria, Archontiko and Patsideros were also impacted, while a state
of emergency was declared in Minoa Pediada. Emergency rescue shelters have
been set up to accommodate for 2,500 people in the area.
