Evacuations underway in southern Odisha state as Cyclone Gulab approaches
Local media reports that some 500 people have been evacuated in southern
Odisha state as Cyclone Gulab approaches. Landslides and flash flooding are
anticipated in the area. The storm is likely to make landfall between
Kalingapatnam and Gopalpur during evening hours local time on 26 September.
The storm is also expected to bring heavy rainfall, wind gusts of up to 95
kmp/h, and cause a storm surge likely to inundate low-lying coastal areas.
The Indian Meteorological Department has warned of damage to poorly built
structures, to communication lines and road networks, and to agricultural
crops.
