Update: State of
emergency extended in South Macrozone until 12 November
Chilean President Sebastian Pinera has extended the state of emergency in
South Macrozone until 12 November. This decree covers the provinces of
Malleco and Cautin in the La Araucania region and the Arauco province in the
Biobio region. The state of emergency allows the Chilean military to assist
police in law enforcement and maintaining public order. South Macrozone has
recently seen clashes between the Mapuche indigenous people and Chilean
security forces. The Mapuche have called for increased autonomy and to have
land currently owned by farmers and logging companies to be returned to them.
