Update: State of emergency declared and political power transferred to the military

Burmese state media has announced the declaration of a one-year state of emergency following the detention of President Win Myint, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and several other members of the National League for Democracy (NLD). Vice President Myint Swe has assumed the position of Acting President and has authorised the transfer of all governmental and political power to military Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing. Telecommunications services remain disrupted in Yangon and Naypyidaw, with reports indicating that the communications blackout is spreading to other parts of Myanmar.
