Update: Armed forces successfully repel Boko Haram assault on Maiduguri in Borno State

The Nigerian Armed Forces have successfully repelled an assault launched by Boko Haram militants on the city of Maiduguri in Borno State. At least a dozen people are reported to have lost their lives in the assault, although this figure is likely to rise as emergency services count the dead on both sides. Heavy shooting broke out in Maiduguri at approximately 1745 local time on 23 February and was followed by several confirmed instances of rocket-propelled grenades launched by Boko Haram militants.
