State
of emergency declared in Tairawhiti following heavy rainfall
Gisborne District Council has confirmed that a state of
emergency has been declared in the district of Tairawhiti in North Island
following heavy rainfall. Severe flooding has been documented in Tolaga Bay
and Tokomaru Bay, and all residents in the Mangatuna area have been urged to
evacuate. The Hikuwai River is reported to have reached a very high water
level and more rain is forecast over the next 24 hours.
