BANGLADESH (CSAR: High) - Protests and Violence
Possible Nationwide during Voting for Local Elections Jan. 5
Violence between rival groups as well as political protests and rallies are
possible during voting for the fifth phase of the Union Parishad or village
council, elections Jan. 5. Residents will vote for around 700 seats across the
country. Heightened security measures are likely in areas where voting is
scheduled to occur.
Analysis: Political parties will hold campaign events, mainly in public
squares of poll-bound areas, in the lead-up to voting. Clashes between
supporters of rival parties are possible in the days leading up to the election
date as well as on the election date itself. Retaliatory protests are also
likely in the aftermath of such violence. Clashes have occurred in several
areas, including Chittagong, Comilla, Cox's Bazar, and Narsingdi, during
previous phases of voting. Some incidents have left multiple people killed or
injured. Party supporters may hold rallies to gather support and protests
denouncing opposing parties. Violence and protests are possible at voting
stations, government buildings, and public squares.
Security personnel will likely try to disperse gatherings and may use force to
break up especially disruptive protests and rallies. Clashes between police and
protesters as well as between supporters of rival groups are possible.
Protesters may march along or block roadways, causing localized transport
disruptions. Violence may result in business disruptions.
