Polio outbreak declared in Lilongwe
The World Health Organisation has declared an outbreak of the wild
poliovirus type one. This follows the detection of a case in a child in
Lilongwe. This is the first case of wild poliovirus in Africa in more than
five years. The WHO is assisting Malawian authorities in carrying out a risk
assessment and conducting supplemental vaccination. The Global Polio
Eradication Initiative is deploying a team to support coordination efforts.
