Magnitude 6.2 earthquake detected in Nueva Concepcion in the Escuintla Department

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has detected a magnitude 6.2 earthquake in the town of Nueva Concepcion in the Escuintla Department of Guatemala. The earthquake struck at a depth of 83.6 kilometres at approximately 07:12 UTC. The National Institute for Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology of Guatemala (INSIVUMEH) has issued a similar confirmation of the earthquake. Widespread shaking across the Escuintla Department has been reported, and powers outages have been documented in Quetzaltenango. No information is currently available regarding the extent of any injuries or casualties caused by the earthquake.

Update: Aftershocks recorded amid reports of infrastructure damage

At least two aftershocks have been reported following a magnitude 6.2 earthquake in Nueva Concepcion in the Escuintla Department of Guatemala. Structural damage and power outages have been reported in urban settlements as far as Guatemala City, and further aftershocks remain possible. The earthquake and its subsequent aftershocks are reported to have triggered landslides in areas such as the Cito-180 road near Quetzaltenango. No injuries or casualties have been documented at this time.
