Update: Russia to deploy troops to separatist regions in
'peacekeeping functions'
Russian authorities have confirmed that troops will be deployed to the
separatist territories of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine. Putin's
decree claims that the troops will be mobilised to ensure 'the maintenance of
peace' in the region. It remains unclear whether troops will solely enter the
territory controlled by the separatist republics or whether they would enter
the rest of the two regions.
