Nationwide state of emergency lifted as security situation eases
Ethiopian state media reports that the House of Peoples' Representatives
has approved the lifting of the nationwide state of emergency in the country
before its scheduled expiry date as there are indications that the security
situation is beginning to ease. Following a swift advance in November last
year, rebel factions in Tigray have retreated. The United Nations believes
that the civil conflict has resulted in the deaths of several thousand
civilians and the displacement of some 2.5 million from their homes.
