Update: Multiple casualties reported following large explosion in Beirut

According to updated reports, extensive casualties have occurred following the large explosion in the port area of Beruit on Tuesday, 4 August. Footage shows extensive damage in the immediate area as well as lesser damage over a wide area of the city. At this time, it remains unclear what caused the blast, with some reports claiming that a fire at a building containing fireworks was the initial cause. It does not appear, however, that the explosion was the result of a bomb or an attack. The authorities have deployed to the area and are managing the situation.

Update - Beirut explosion reportedly the result of improper chemical storage

Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab has announced that initial investigations indicate that the large explosion that occurred at the port of Beirut was the result of several thousand tons of improperly stored ammonium nitrate. Further investigations as to what caused the chemical to explode are ongoing. A state of emergency has been declared in Beirut for at least 14 days. Currently, reporting indicates that there have been dozens of deaths and thousands of injuries as a result of the explosion.

Authorities warn of potential for harmful pollution north of Beirut after explosion

Meteorological authorities have warned residents of Beirut to avoid the mountainous areas north of the city due to potential clouds of toxic pollutants emitted by the recent port explosion. Details of the explosion are still emerging, though at least 100 fatalities have been reported so far, with thousands more injured.

Following a significant explosion more than 100 people have been killed and a further 4,000 injured. 

The full extent of the damage remains unclear at this time, many buildings overlooking the port appear structurally compromised,including the president’s official residences, headquarters of former PM Saad Hariri and the CNN’s bureau in the city’s downtown. The vast majority of hospital admissions were for glass related injuries, which quickly overwhelmed Beirut’s hospitals and emergency services. More bodies are expected to be found in the coming hours and days as rescue work continues.Investigations are underway with the cause of the fire remaining unclear at this time. However, it has been stressed that officials do not believe there will be any further explosions nor are they currently treating the blast as an attack.
