COVID-19 state of emergency declared in Batu Sapi, Sabah, postponing election

Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah has assented to a declaration of emergency in the Batu Sapi region of Sabah. The decision will result in the postponement of a by-election due to be held in December. A previous election in September is believed by experts to have caused a significant spike in COVID-19 cases. Whilst health protocols of Conditional Movement Control Order will be enforced, authorities have said there will be no curfew or military rule in the Batu Sapi constituency, and that economic and social activities could continue. The election, however, has been postponed until after the pandemic has been resolved.
