Heavy shelling reported in Mekelle as government forces begin offensive to capture the city

The leader of rebel forces in Tigray has stated that Ethiopian government forces have launched an offensive in an effort to capture Mekelle, the regional capital. Heavy shelling has been reported in the area. A spokesperson for the Prime Minister's office has already declared that civilian areas will not be bombarded, however, civilian casualties cannot be ruled out. Fighting between government forces and the Tigray People's Liberation Front has been ongoing in recent weeks as federal forces have steadily captured several towns held by the rebels on their way to Mekelle.
